Shareware is a software distribution system under which you are free to try out a piece of software for a period of time (usually on the order of 30 days or so) for evaluation purposes without obligation. If you decide that you would like to continue using the software, you are required to send a small fee (in the case of DiskTracker 2, $30) to the author for the continued usage of the program, or else delete the software from your system. If you choose to register, the authors will, in return, give you notice of any future updates and provide low-cost/free upgrades when requested. And, we’ll give you our eternal gratitude. Really!
You may (and we certainly encourage it) freely distribute UNREGISTERED copies of DiskTracker to friends and associates, as well as upload it to bulletin board/on-line services and internet FTP sites. If you choose to pass around copies of DiskTracker, be sure you include all of the documentation and support files which were originally included with the program. We would certainly prefer that you distribute the DiskTracker Installer as it appears on the DiskTracker web site, however - it's just simpler that way!
Please get our permission before distributing DiskTracker on CD-ROMs or on other collections by sending email to support@portents.com.
Note that we have not disabled features in unregistered copies of DiskTracker. We feel that it is important, as it allows you, the user, to get more acquainted with all of a program’s features, and it builds a trusting relationship between you (the user) and us (the software developers). However, IN NO WAY, does this free you from your obligation to register the software. So send off those checks!
Okay, so how to I register?
In the "DiskTracker Registration" folder (the same place where you found this read me), is an application called "Register DiskTracker". When you launch this application, you are presented with a form which you need to fill out. You can then print out the order form (or copy it to the clipboard to email it). You then send the form to:
